When testing out these tailgating sunglasses, I was at first a bit tentative to use it like a bottle opener at the bar. I’ll admit it. I was skeptical of the claim that the Bottle Grip would keep your beer cold just as if it was in a beer koozie. All it is is a plastic handle that snaps onto your 12 oz. bottle to make it look like you are drinking out of a mug. Rather clever for sure but how could it keep the beer cold as the manufacturer claimed? I decided to put the bottle grip through its paces complete with digital thermometers to see if it really can keep your beer cold. (Click on the images to view larger example)

The Bottle Grip is just like the Can Grip with the only difference it is designed to fit over a bottle instead of a can. The function of both are essentially the same. Keep your hand and body heat away from the can or bottle while also creating the illusion of drinking from a handled mug. We put this claim to the test and compiled a video to prove it. Although we used the Can Grip in the video, our results were the same when using the Bottle Grip.

As you saw in the video, the beer using the Can Grip only gained about seven or eight degrees in 15 minutes. The beer I held in my bare hand for 15 minutes went from 37 degrees to 68 degrees. Since the inception of tailgating, beer seems to be the adult beverage of choice in the parking lots around the nation. Why wouldn’t it be? It’s convenient and easy to transport and comes in it’s own container. (Not to mention it tastes pretty damn good too.) What about the non-beer drinking tailgaters? A lot of people, or, dare we say, women, don’t like beer. Many women (and a few guys here and there, not that there is anything wrong with that.) would rather have a blender drink while tailgating. Finding a power converter that is strong enough to mix a batch of margaritas using your home blender is next to impossible. A 12-volt blender can be expensive and buying one is not very practical if you are a casual tailgater and will not use it on a weekly basis. Other tips you should consider when using the Drill Blender is you should use more ice than liquid when mixing a drink. Just like your blender at home, if you put in a few chunks of ice they will just float around the top of the bottle. For best results fill your bottle to about the top of the handle with ice. Add your liquid to about 2/3rds of the ice. This will give your Drill Blender blades something to grab onto and blend. Also, it may sound silly but make sure to use both hands; one holding the drill and the other holding the bottle handle. Lastly, before heading out to tailgate with the Drill Blender, make sure your drill battery has a full charge. The Drill Blender is pretty ingenious but it can not overcome a dead or weak battery.

Summer tailgating is great because not only does daylight savings allow for prolonged tailgating but the warm temperatures means the tailgating babes are wearing more revealing clothing. I was sent a sample cylinder to test out and run a thorough review on it. I was impressed from the moment I took it out of the box. The first thing that stood out to me was that the cylinder was so light and easy to pick up. I opened up the box it came in while my 4 year-old daughter and 2 year-old son “helped”. They both wanted to check it out and both were able to pick it up off the floor. Had this been an empty steel propane tank, I would not have let them attempt to pick it up for fear they would drop it on their foot and a trip to the ER would be in my future.

The next thing I noticed was the ergonomic handle. I really appreciated this feature once it was filled and had some real weight to it but I will get to that later. The handle fit well in my hand and was a nice change from the metal handles that always seem too thin and dig into the palm of your hand when full. I also liked the wide base the Clear View Propane Tank offered. I have been a big proponent of the Tanksetter in that it widens the base of your normal metal propane cylinder so it won’t tip over easily. But the Clear View Propane Tank makes that obsolete in that the base is plenty wide and someone would have a hard time knocking it over. Take a look at the photos I shot comparing it to a regular steel tank, my customized San Diego Chargers propane tank, a Steel tank with the Tanksetter and of course, the Clear View Propane Tank.

As you can see in the photos I had no problem having my local propane filling station filling it up. I’ll admit it. I was skeptical of the claim that the Can Grip would keep your beer cold just as if it was in a beer koozie. All it is is a plastic handle that snaps onto your 12 oz. can to make it look like you are drinking out of a mug. Rather clever for sure but how could it keep the beer cold as the manufacturer claimed? I decided to put the can grip through its paces complete with digital thermometers to see if it really can keep your beer cold. As you saw in the video, the beer using the Can Grip only gained about seven or eight degrees in 15 minutes. The beer I held in my bare hand for 15 minutes went from 37 degrees to 68 degrees. Normally when you are out tailgating, the only silicone in abundance is under the tight t-shirts and ultra-small jerseys on the eye candy roaming the parking lot. Upon receiving the Silipint and taking it out of the packaging, we noticed that it was very sturdy and could tell this thing was going to be able to take a lot of abuse. We squeezed it, folded it and even threw it on my tile kitchen floor. I stepped on it (I weigh about 285 pounds depending on what I had for breakfast that morning) and even took it out to the garage and put it in a vice and cranked it tight. I then placed about 8 oz. of water in the Silipint and then put it in the microwave for 5 minutes. The water boiled inside the Silipint but did not melt nor make the inner surface bubble. When I took it out of the microwave I was able to hold the Silipint in my hand without having to wrap it with a paper towel or a cloth. Had it been a traditional glass pint glass, there would have been no way I could have held the glass without some protection on my hand.

The Silipint withstood all that abuse and when I filled it full of water, there were no leaks or cracks whatsoever. It was at this point that I was determined to be the one guy that was going to somehow break this thing. That’s when I grabbed my video camera and filmed myself running over it with my tailgating vehicle. Here’s the video:

If you chose to skip the video, trust me, the Silipint withstood my SUV backing over it. It even held up when I tried to stretch it over the end of a broom handle. After each test I put it through, I poured water in it and it showed no signs of leakage, cracks or breaks. Now that the torture test were complete I tested it for its practicality for use while tailgating.

Normally when you take party cups tailgating, you need to be careful when packing them because any amount of pressure will cause them to split or crack. I don’t know how many times I have gotten to the parking lot only to find my cooler shifted during the drive and has crushed my sleeve of party cups. I see people shotgunning beers all the time when I am out tailgating. When it comes to tailgating, many people like to bring the party in the parking lot into the stadium with them. But continuing the party inside while paying the high prices of concessions stands, especially beer and alcohol, can break the bank. That’s one of the main reasons why tailgating has gained in popularity in that you can control costs better in the parking lot than you can once you go inside. This same reason is why inventors have created covert and incognito ways to smuggle in your own adult beverages without being detected by security pat downs.

First on the scene was the Floppy Flask then The Beer Belly and Booze Belly and even the Wine Rack. The rectangular shape does not have a natural body shape to it. Most guys I know that have a little beer gut do not have a layer of fat in the shape of a rectangle. This shape and the location of wearing it around your stomach enables easier detection.

The Freedom Flask has taken the overall concept of these previous designs and made simple but far reaching improvements.

Improvement No. 1: Offering a curved bottom edge to allow all of the liquid to drain directly into the drain valve until completely empty.

Improvement No. 2: Placing the drain valve in the middle of the flask so it lines up perfectly with your zipper. Instead of wearing the Freedom Flask around your stomach, it tucks into the top of your pants or shorts. I have been through my share of security pat downs and never has anyone patted me there.

So now that you have seen how to use it properly, the video did raise a question for me. The user needs to unzip their zipper and pull out the nozzle to dispense the liquid. Not to be crass but it has all the same movements of a guy trying to take a whizz. When using the Floppy Flask if you are in your seat at the stadium and lift up your shirt and pour some booze into your drink and someone looks over and sees you, they might not complain to security. They’ll probably poke their friend and point you out and say, “Hey there’s a smart guy saving some money”.

If you are unzipping your pants, digging around in there and pulling something out that later is squirting liquid into a cup… that may raise a few more eyebrows. That may have someone using those in-stadium text messaging systems to alert security. Because of this feature I would suggest not refilling in your seat but rather taking your cup into the bathroom and refilling in there. Other than the body language issue of using this product, I see no other negative compared to other similar products.

The construction is top notch, made right here in the U.S.A. in Columbus, Ohio, and they are easy to transport and set up. They also take up less room than standard cornhole boards in your vehicle on the way to tailgate.

The basic rules and scoring are a bit different as well. The ultimate goal to winning is to score 21 points and win by two. A washer landing on the mat is one (1) point, a ‘leaner’, washer on the mat and hanging over the hole is two (2) points, and a ‘ringer’, falling into the hole onto the grass or asphalt is three (3) points. Scoring is all or nothing meaning only one player or team can score points per round. The player with the most points in each round adds that amount to their total score. The other player gets no points added to their total score. If the score happens to be tied in a round, it is considered a “push” and neither team receives any points.

You’ll notice that in the video that we took turn tossing our washers. That was done to demonstrate the way the Washeroos boards provide bounce and play during the game. (It would have been boring watching me miss all four of my washers in a row.) In a normal game, one player tosses all four of his/her washers, leaving them where they fall. The next player then tosses all four of their washers. Where the washers finally land after all players have taken their turn is where they are scored. washers may bounce off the grass or asphalt onto the unit, be knocked into the hole by another washer or opponent’s washer, get knocked off the board by a washer, etc. It really doesn’t matter how the washer gets there as long as the players toss their washers from 20 feet away.
